Paper Dolls and Paper Airplanes Therapeutic Exercises for Sexually Traumatized Children

Review by an Amazon Customer

This book provides really great exercises to use with groups or individuals. I am a therapist, and I have found that kids respond well to the activities and are eager to return for the next group. They make discussing and dealing with a difficult issue much less threatening. It also makes it easy for kids to learn and remember the skills they are being taught in therapy. It is a good investment for clinicians. This does contain sensitive material, and should be used only by trained professionals.

Play Therapy

Product Description
The author discusses the use of play therapy for children with behavioral, emotional or other psychological problems. The bulk of the text consists of highly readable annotated transcripts of therapeutic sessions that illustrate the principles. The transcripts are authentic, and the annotations include comments on errors the therapist makes, as well as positive points. No other book comes near this one for readability and clinical credibility.

From the Inside Flap
“The most brilliant and intuitive, as well as the clearest written, work in this field. It is unpretentious yet clearly the most authoritative work that has been published.”

NORMAN CAMERON, Ph.D.
Professor of Psychiatry
Yale University School of Medicine
Here is an intensely practical book that gives specific illustrations of how therapy can be implemented in play contacts, and tells how the toys of the playroom can be vivid performers and aids in growth. As she did with DIBS IN SEARCH OF SELF, Dr. Axline has taken true case histories from the rich mine of verbatim case material of children referred for play therapy, choosing children ranging in age, problem, and personality. It’s all here in an important and rewarding book for parents, teachers, and anyone who comes in contact with children. –This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

Play Therapy: The Art of the Relationship

Review
‘Dr. Garry Landreth has made yet another significant contribution to the field of play therapy with the revised and expanded second edition of his landmark, award-winning text, Play Therapy: The Art of the Relationship. This book is rare in its scope, including a historical, theoretical, and practical-how to approach to play therapy; in addition to providing invaluable insights into the child’s world and the therapeutic power of play within the context of the child-therapist relationship. This is the essential text for an introductory play therapy course and a must read for all child therapists.’ – Sue C. Bratton, Ph.D., University of North Texas, President, Association for Play Therapy 2001-2002

‘The first edition was a classic and this second edition builds upon that groundbreaking work with the addition of chapters dealing with intensive and short-term play and an expansion of Filial Therapy. A major strength of the text is the inclusion of current play therapy research, much of which comes from the work of Landreth and his students. There is no other text in print that is as comprehensive.this text will continue to set the standard for training and practice.’ – Joanna F. White, Professor and Chair, Department of Counseling and Psychological Services, Georgia State University, President-elect, Association for Play Therapy

Product Description
Play is to the child what verbalization is to the adult-it is a medium for expressing feelings, exploring relationships, describing experiences and disclosing wishes. Guidelines, transcripts and case examples are provided for governing sensitive issues at every stage of the therapeutic process, from the first meeting to the end of the relationship.

Short-Term Play Therapy for Children, Second Edition

Review
“Short-Term Play Therapy for Children, Second Edition, is the definitive book on the subject. If you are a mental health professional using play therapy with children, you need this book. If you are an elementary school counselor who has limited time, you need this book. If you are a professor teaching a class on advanced play therapy strategies or working with children on a time-limited basis, you need this book. It provides detailed, practical information about applying short-term play therapy with individual clients, families, and groups, with a wide variety of populations and issues.”–Terry Kottman, PhD, The Encouragement Zone, Cedar Falls, Iowa

“Play therapists should be well versed in effective short-term interventions for children for two reasons. First, children simply cannot afford to be in psychological distress for extended periods of time because of the negative impact this can have on their healthy development. Second, because of the financial and time constraints often imposed by third-party payers, the therapist needs to strive to make each session maximally beneficial. This book can be particularly effective in helping graduate students make the transition from traditional models of psychotherapy, which suggest open-ended treatment, to more focused models better suited to the developmental needs of children. It provides all mental health professionals with essential tools and strategies to help children make rapid gains in therapy in our ever more fast-paced world.”–Kevin O’Connor, PhD, RPT-S, California School of Professional Psychology, Alliant International University

“This timely book is full of very helpful and creative play therapy interventions appropriate for short-term work with individuals, families, and groups. The structured, goal-oriented approaches described in the many detailed case examples will be welcomed by practicing clinicians and by professors who teach play therapy in various university settings. By acknowledging the reality of time factors and their impact on the structure of treatment, this book helps guide the field of play therapy in the 21st century.”–Nancy Boyd Webb, DSW, BCD, RPT-S, Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service

The Healing Power of Play: Working with Abused Children

Reviews
After reading The Healing Power of Play, child therapists from every professional background will feel better equipped to confront the enormous challenge of treating the abused child….Dr. Gil’s readable guide should inspire the field and thereby benefit all of our patients — Spencer Eth, MD

Both the novice child therapist and experienced clinician will learn abundantly from Dr. Gil’s instruction about effective intervention with even the most severely neglected and abused children — Treating Abuse Today

Eliana Gil occupies an unparalleled position among professionals in the child abuse field. No one has worked longer, more faithfully, and more responsibly with such a diverse array of abusive interactions — Roland C. Summit, M.D.

Product Description
Children traumatized by either abuse or neglect have special therapeutic needs. They can be difficult to engage for a variety of reasons: many have been frightened into silence and many have had their trust in adults betrayed; they may be hostile and acting out; and, if young, they may lack the sophistication of language or sexual terminology to clearly impart what has occurred. Whether or not children know how to communicate directly with a therapist, all children know how to play. This book describes how therapists can both facilitate constructive play therapy and intervene in posttraumatic play to help children who have been traumatized by abuse or neglect achieve a positive resolution.

The book combines theory with a practical “how-to” approach for treating abused children. Traditional techniques of play therapy are reviewed for their application to this population. Special emphasis is given to posttraumatic play in two ways. First, because rigid posttraumatic play can be dangerous–it does not help to release anxiety and tends to fixate the child on the trauma and subsequent difficult emotions–the book demonstrates how to intervene when this type of play occurs. Second, the book explains how to facilitate flexible and dynamic posttraumatic play when it does not surface spontaneously in treatment. This sort of play can be very constructive in helping the child to assimilate the traumatic experience. Throughout, numerous therapeutic aids are described to enhance the child’s capacity to communicate verbally or symbolically.

To help clinicians translate theory into daily practice, the book presents six detailed clinical vignettes of trauma stemming from different types of abuse or neglect. The cases included involve severe parental neglect, chronic and episodic sexual abuse, and neglect compounded by hospitalization. Presenting step-by-step guidelines for assessment and intervention, these cases clearly illustrate treatment planning and how to tailor responses to particular children, including children with multiple personality disorder. They demonstrate how to use directive and nondirective play therapy techniques as treatment progresses.

With its valuable insights and practical guidance, THE HEALING POWER OF PLAY is an essential resource for all mental health professionals who work with abused children. Those who work with adult survivors will learn much of value for treating the “child within.” The book also serves as a text for advanced courses on child therapy, child development, family therapy, domestic violence, or child abuse. Other professionals who come into contact with abused children such as protective service workers, medical professionals, clergy, teachers, and day-care professionals will find much of interest.
